Lawn aeration is the process of removing plugs of grass and soil from a lawn. Lawn aeration is done to provide room for air and water to penetrate through the grass thatch and get to the grass roots. The removed plugs also create spaces in the lawn where fertilizer and seeds can get to the soil and be more effective. Lawn aeration also allows for grass roots to grow vertically and horizontally making for a stronger and more plush lawn.
In the Chicagoland area aeration is best done in the early spring or in the fall. Lawn aeration is normally coupled with overseeding, since the plugs give spaces for the new grass seeds to embed themselves into the soil.
